Cooking Video for Kids: Healthy Homemade Salad Dressing Recipe

Homemade dressing time!!

We use this recipe in our Kids Cook Real Food course for intermediate kids to practice measuring… But today we are going to go ironic on that.

My goal is to show families how flexible cooking from scratch can be, and how much room there is for error. So we aren’t really even using a recipe. (But don’t worry! I’ve included the original recipe and variations below for you!)

Watch as John learns how to crush whole garlic cloves, and as always, we will share all the substitutions you could use for this homemade Italian dressing (including how to make it Greek!).

Homemade Salad Dressing Recipe Made by Kids

Ingredients

  • 3/4 c. extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 – 1/2 c. vinegar
  • 2 tsp. garlic powder or a couple of cloves raw garlic
  • 2 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 Tbs. Dijon mustard

Directions

  1. Mix the ingredients in order according to the list above.
  2. You can mix it all right in a liquid measuring cup to make it easy to measure the oil, and then use a fork or small whisk to mix it all together. OR just mix/shake it in the container you’re going to store the dressing in.
  3. Store at room temperature for a month, preferably out of the light (use a solid container, or store it in the cupboard).

Homemade Salad Dressing Flavor Variations

  • Greek Dressing: Use oregano instead of Italian seasoning and lemon juice instead of vinegar.
  • For a taco salad dressing, use apple cider vinegar, taco seasoning instead of Italian seasoning, and leave out the mustard.
  • You can use white or red wine vinegar. Apple cider vinegar will add a very different, sweeter flavor. Experiment with other kinds of vinegar as well!
  • Mix up the seasonings for a different creative dressing each time!
  • Here’s a video of my daughter Leah and I making Ceasar dressing.
